Hello!
This blog post I know is a little late but i was quite busy last week, finishing off assignments and then travelling back to Ireland, and I'm here now!
Last Monday we had a really short session where basically we received verbal feedback on our production, what was wrong with it and what was right with it! I think overall I am happy with that module after the first semester.
In contemporary media studies last week we concluded the game assignment and then we had a short lecture on narrative and storytelling. After this we had to get into groups and construct a linear or non-linear story throughout the Screen School using the first line of a book, which we were given on a small piece of paper. Me, Mark and Lois were put into a group and we had really good fun throughout the lesson, we used different forms of media to carry the story through, for example we had a Facebook status, a Dictaphone and others.
In digital media tools, we screened all of our animations. Unfortunately me and Sam haven't been able to completely finish the animation because we haven't had a chance to use the after effects software, but after Christmas Ian is going to give us a hand to finish it off.
For creativity and concept we have had two assignments and I am glad to say I have them both done thank goodness! They weren't too hard actually just quite time consuming. The essay I found not too bad to write, but I am new to referencing so hopefully I've done it right. The Screenr presentation on reflection was quite interesting to do actually because the research I did had me reading certain peoples thoughts and expert opinions. As well as this, it was actually a good reflection process doing the Screenr ironically!
On Friday we had our last film language class where we got our exam results back. I got a 2.1 (62) which I'm really happy with, at least I know I'm on the right path I guess. After this we had a Christmas party which was fun and it wrapped up the semester well :)
Merry Christmas everyone!

Chapter 8.5
So I'm just sitting in my room doing a but of uni stuff, so why not leave a short blog post?
Today we went into the Screen School to get our feedback on the People On The Move project. Overall I think that our feedback was really good! Camilla pointed out a few small things that we will need to improve on in the future, but I'm glad that she told us now we will concentrate a lot more on the next project, which I believe is going to be factual. This is going to be something completely new to me as well.
Last night I started and finished my reflection essay for Creativity and Concept. It took me a while but it really wasn't as bad as I thought. The next thing to do is the Screenr presentation which I think I'm going to start tonight. We have to record a voice over as we present our ideas on what reflection is, some people are a bit nervous about doing a voice over, but for me this will be fine as I have no problem talking...and talking...and talking haha.
There is a link that I would like to add to the post actually. The link is to the website Stumbleupon. I think this is one of the coolest websites I've ever came across and hats off to whoever made it, like they say the simplest ideas are the best.
Here's the link - Stumbleupon
Okay I think that is all for now, I'll update soon!

Chapter 8
Last week was a bit hectic! In Monday's class we presented our final cut of the People On The Move assignment and I thoroughly enjoyed everyone's short films, and it was also nice to see ours on the big screen! Me and Orlagh came in slightly earlier just to touch up on any editing that needed to be fixed and it turned out we had it complete with about 45 minutes to go so we decided to add in some fun credits at the end! I'm sure I'm not just speaking for myself though when i say that in the end i am really happy with our film and although it was slightly stressful to begin with, in the end it was really rewarding to have it finished and exactly how we wanted it, have a watch below:
Okay so on Tuesday then, we had to present our game ideas to the class in Contemporary Media Issues. Drew was my partner and we had came up with the idea of Screen School Olympics. This is basically a set of small, simple games that represent certain events within the Olympics for example for fencing we used whiteboard markers instead of the fencing swords (obviously!) and it was all good fun. The week before we did user testing, so we got Smars and Ian to be our users and took pictures and various small clips which we added into our Prezi presentation. The presentation went really well actually, I really do think that Prezi's are really good for things like this and now that I'm getting the hang of it, it is an online that i will definitely use in the future! One thing that I'm looking forward to is getting feedback on this small assignment and also the Wiki assignment, just to see if I'm doing the right thing haha. Have a look at our Prezi :)
In Digital Media Tools this week we finished off the animation project, we actually haven't 100% completed it, all we have to do is put it together in After Effects, hopefully it works!
In Thursday's class we basically kind of recapped everything and got given the assignment brief again but in more detail, which was good because I wasn't too sure about it.
I think Ive went on for a bit too long there so I'll finished there, its nearly Christmas and I'm quite excited as I'm going back to Ireland so it will be really good to catch up with everyone, I will keep posting though.

Chapter 7
Hey there guys! I have been busy this week so there is a good bit to talk about! Last week we finished off our Wiki and moved on to the next section in contemporary media issues. We are now working in pairs and have to come up with a new game. The game doesn't have to be made technically, but it has to be a reasonable idea.
Me and Drew are working together which is good. We came up with the idea of Screen School Olympics, which involves playing a series of simple games that doesn't require much skill and is suitable for all people.
In digital media tools, me and Sam are a good bit through our project but it is a long and repetitive process! Here is a picture of our animation:
In other classes, we had out first test last Friday in film language! We had to analyse a 10 minute clip of North By Northwest which I was actually quite glad about because out of all the films we've watched so far this year, it is definitely one of my favourites. I don't know how I have done but I will update you!
In creativity and concept media we had a session of Lego Serious Play. I wasn't sure how this was going to work or what we were specifically going to be doing but it turned out that I found the session really fun and interesting and I think I've brought something away from Lego now other than it being awesome haha.
Okay I will finish there before I ramble on too much!

Chapter 6
Hey guys, so I know this blog entry is a bit late but ah well. So last week in class we finished off our Wiki project and we were cutting it close! In the end though it actually turned out to be pretty cool and there were some cool comments and videos made about Futuretainment. Below is a short discussion that we video recorded to give people an idea of our opinions of the book as students.
I think overall, the Wiki assignment was slightly boring but I did learn a lot of things about Mike Walsh and what goes on in his head haha. Here's the link to our Wiki page:
In digital media tools, last week we received our first proper project which was to pair up and create an animation. Me and Sam have had an idea and we started to take pictures for it. It is a short narrative of a guy meeting a girl and them conversing being in separate photographs. Here are some pictures to give you an idea:
These are just a couple of photos from what we have, believe me there are many many more!
I think that is a successful update on whats going on with me and my friend media at the minute I shall speak soon to you all!

Chapter 5.5.
Hey guys! So i know that we're on Reading Week at the minute but I have a bit of spare time so I thought I'd make a small blog entry :)
Well this week I'm going to try and get a bit of work done, in Contemporary Media Issues we have to hand in our first draft of the Wiki project. I think we'll get it done we just have to arrange a time when we can all meet up and do some of the video aspects etc. In Film Language we were assigned our first essay last week. We have to analyse a 5 minute clip of a movie of our choice using the skills we've learnt so far, but we have to use a column type grid thing to fill in, which I'm a bit confused about! I'll get it done though, I hope ha.
Other than that there isn't much else going on, oh in Digital Media Tools i have to think of what i want my stop frame animation to be, haven't thought much about that yet though.
That's pretty much it! Byeeee!

Chapter 5
Hey again!
So yesterday we had our Wiki thing again and I'm starting to kind of grasp it and understand how it could be useful. I think a lot of people sort of think that its a bit boring and i do agree to a certain extent but i think once we get more into it., it will be way more interesting! The group work thing is really great though I feel, its just good dong things in groups and finding out more and more about people in your group, because to be honest, I think that we have a real interesting group of people in our class.
I read into Mike Walsh and he its really interesting, I think he has been influenced a lot by more unconventional markets e.g. Asia, Brazil. When i researched him I discovered that these more unorthodox markets and industries are a lot more innovative than the Western Worlds, which is really cool. Stuff like that makes me want to read further into these industries and see how much they actually contribute to the worlds innovation and how recognized they are by the world in general. Also Mike Walsh looks really cool haha.
The second lesson of the day was the Digital Media Tools lesson. Ian showed us numerous animations in his lecture and introduced animation to us in general. We then went into the computer suite and played around with the Adobe After Effects software. At first I was really confused about how to use it, but then Mark explained it to me and it wasn't actually so bad, quite fun as well! The picture sequence we used was really funny though so it was all good.
On another note I think the Creativity and Concept class is quite cool these days, I didn't realize how many different ways there are to be creative! ha. All new to me. We had to watch a video on YouTube for tomorrow, it was a bit old but was really cool and it showed me that in reality the top businesses and creators do use these sorts of techniques to create things and develop ideas.
I think that will do for now actually, I've talked maybe a bit too much there, I get a bit carried away at times haha.
Here's some Mozart to improve your Knowledge!

Chapter 4
Hey guys.
I am updating my blog a couple of days late this week sorry! On Tuesday we continued our investigation into Futuretainment and Mike Walsh and things are starting to come together I feel! I'm slowing growing on to wetpaint as well which is good!
Today in class we went to "The Automatic" which was really good. I think that having class in there is really good as it has a real positive atmosphere about it and I feel a lot more motivated to work in that environment. We used a creative method called SCUMPER which basically aided the development of an idea. It was extremely useful to me and it helped our group finalise an idea about sharing ideas!
I really enjoy Thursdays because not only do I actually learn methods of creating ideas and research creative artists, I have a lot of fun doing it and I also think the Lecturers attitude towards our learning is really cool.
Anyways I think that will do for now, I have to try get the hang of this sketchbook thing, but it took me a bit to get the hang of blogging so I guess I'll get there! On a leaving note I was saying to a couple of people in class, how cool would it be to have entrance theme songs for whenever we entered class? I think The Automatic entrance tune should be this ha ha:
Awesome, Josh Out.

Chapter 3
Well, today was good, and actually I thought I'd maybe talk about yesterdays class as well actually because I haven't really done that yet. Yesterday was the production practice module and it was really cool because we had the Director of the Film "Will" come in and have a chat with us! Her name is Ellen Perry and she has a background in directing but mostly non-fictional projects so it was interesting to hear her talk about directing fiction and also about her past as a director.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ellen_Perry
There's a link to her page on Wikipedia, there's not that much to it but it may give you a small insight as to who she is and what shes done!
Okay enough about yesterday, today was good, Tuesdays can seem like they might be a drag as we have two classes during the day but actually i find they seem to be just as long as when we have one class? Don't ask me why but...yea haha.
Wow just heard a loud bang outside my halls.... cool.
I thought both classes were good today, I think they're good because I'm learning something new everyday really so I want to go to class I guess, and also because everyday I'm chatting to someone new or getting to know someone a bit better. We did this cool exercise today in digital media tools, were we had to tell a story through 5 shots, this at first seemed as though it might be really hard but then I started thinking of just really simple ideas and me and Joel took the shots quickly and it turned out to be a good laugh and really funny also!
I think that'll do for now, trying to think of something to leave you with...mmmm... okay a friendly picture and another YouTube video....
And video...

Chapter 2
Hey there again! So yea today I was in contemporary media issues and once again I had a really good session as well as my afternoon session which was digital media tools. 1st lession we learnt how to use another free online software website called wetpaint. We had to create what was called Wiki's and it proved to be relatively fun. What I would say is though I have enjoyed the other websites and software more so than this website today, I think I'm maybe more of a visual kind of person when it comes to presentation rather than just plain writing and linking between pages, but thats not to say I didnt enjoy it because I did!
I think now that everyone is settling in class is getting better and better because everyone is starting to get to know each other and I have to say I really do like my class, everyone seems really sound and I've had a good laugh with everyone I've spent time with so far.
The afternoon session though I felt was really good today and I learnt quite a lot. We had to alter images that we took throughout the week on photoshop and at the start of the class I was ridiculously bad haha. Then as the class went on I actually got the hang of it, Media will make a photogrpaher out of me yet! Ill show you my images:
Hope they look okay...probably not ha. I really enjoyed Photoshop though and its the sort of thing I'd quite like to get good or at least relatively good at.
I think thats pretty much for today but I do see that I have a few viewers now...Legendsa thankyou, but I need more so follow me!.... You know you want to ;)
Some more Jazzy Elevator music for you, only this time.... I have the video! Boom!

Chapter 1
Hello again :)
On Tuesday in Contemporary Media issues we were required to come up with a presentation using online programme Prezzi. I had never used this software before so once again it was something new for me to try out! I actually really enjoyed using it and I'm starting to realize that my course is really fun but I definitely am learning from it and all the things that I'm learning I am really wanting to learn, if you get me?
Our group had really good fun during the session and our finished piece, I thought, was quite good! We used a default template which was a picture of like a pathway type thing, but we jigged around the frames and titles. We had to bring in an object that meant something to us. For my object I chose my headphones for a number of reasons. Firstly because I really like them and they have treated me well since I have moved to Liverpool, secondly because they are like the last thing i purchased before coming to uni and thirdly because most of my meaningful objects are still at home so I didn't have a lot to choose from!
So our presentation looked like this:

Oh and by the way to all the guys in my group for the presentation, I couldn't find that song but instead I will link you to some lovely elevator music, to keep the mood mellow...
Dunno if you can click that link guys, haven't worked that one out yet so just copy and paste :)

The Beginning
Hello, my name is Josh McDowell and I have just started Media Professional Studies at LJMU. I studied R.E, Media and I.T at A level and although I enjoy media the most out of those subjects I didnt enjoy it as much because a lot of it was theory based and I am more of a practical person. But even though I enjoy it as much I still knew that I wanted to do media at uni. So taking that into consideration, I actually havent made proper short films or used media equipment really at all, but i really want to! I have had experience in radio, I know a bit about that and I have been on camera before. When I was in Primary School, we had what was believed to be the first Primary School radio station in Ireland and potentially the UK but I'm not sure. It was such a good experience and I think it was the spawn of my media interest. The BBC decided to come and film like a short documentary on the radio station and it was just really cool to be 10 and have people talk to you and film you and stuff. I've also done acting on stage which is becoming a passion I think. Another passion is music, I love music probably so much. If I think about it, I am the sort of person that would rather be infront of the camera rather than behind, but I'm so glad to be on this course because I will learn to understand what goes on behind the camera and will learn to apprteciate that. I like the idea of cameras and sound and the idea of being able to create something that other people will see and hopefully enjoy. I also really love the fact that making films or shorty videos gives someone the oppurtunity to be someone completely different to themselves and for that short period of time, they are in a different world, either literally or mentally.
My main passion in media is films. Me and my mate would go to the cinema every sunday and we would call it "Sunday Cinema Club". Yea I know it sounds really weird ha, but it was kind of a joke. I could probably talk about movies for hours. I'm very open to movies I feel, in a way that I will watch any movie and generally I will like it, unless it really is bad. I am into all genres really, but I havent had as much experience with Independant movies as such, which I would be interested in exploring throughout my time here. There so much more in Liverpool compared to where I live and I think that now I'm here, I will full make use of this.
In the future I'm not actually quite sure what I'd like to be, like I said before I can see myself being infront of the camera rather than behind, it seems more fun and I like having fun ha. I want to be in the media industry for a number of reasons though. Firstly the media industry is exciting, there is a massive competative edge to the media industry and I am an extremely competative person. I'm also a bit of an adrenaline junkie and being in the media, in certain situations will be a bit insane, which sounds so good! I never wanted to have a "normal" job, in the sense that I never wanted to end up working in like a shop or something. I know that these days, getting a job in media is going to be hard, but I feel that MPS will help me to get where I want to be. I am a people person which I think helps, also I'm not a nervous person, like I said I kind of thrive on nerves. I play rugby which I actually think has helped me in a lot of ways when it comes to team work and stuff. So yea in the future, I definately want to be in the media industry, I think like presenting would be cool.
As a consumer, I love most types of media, I read the paper, I watch a lot of movies, I listen to the radio, watch TV and all of the rest. To date I havent really produced that much to be honest, but I am really keen to produce, with sound and picture. I have used music software before for example Ableton, Fruity Loops and I would mix music using software called Virtual DJ, so i guess in sense I have produced that sort of stuff but picture and film wise not that much at all. But I am looking forward to producing. Yea my blog is getting too long now so I will stop, but I'm looking forward to becoming friends with Media :)
